I got the military version which has white characters on black background and red night vision light.
I wish I had tried the non military version to see if I can read it better.
Since I need reading glasses, when I am not wearing any I struggle at night to read the digits. Some are very small. The red LED does not not help much. It is not as much a problem during the day. My old fashion analog watch fares much better at night.
Having said that, the watch is fantastic in everything other sense. I would not call it a watch, it is an instrument panel.
Keep a manual handy, as you will need it from time to time.

My son wants this watch for christmas i can get it in a military store for $480. We do a lot of hiking, biking, and skiing should i get it.
